The Turkish cast on is used in most sock patterns that are knitted from the toe up – or anywhere where there is an edge that would look better if it were seamless.

This cast on creates two sets of stitches on circular needles – one set on the top and one set on the bottom. The two sets of stitches are joined so that there is no seam to sew up.
